Why choose Manor Barn?

Manor Barn is located on a family-run farm in Harlton, Cambridgeshire, offering countryside views, intimacy and bags of rustic charm.

Consistently praised as one of the most characterful barn wedding venues in the region. Historic and beautiful, it has this nice balance of feeling special without being stuffy.

Set on a quiet village lane in Harlton, 6 miles west of Cambridge, Grade II listed Manor Barn has an agricultural history dating back over 400 years. Formerly a wheat and grain store, the Tythe Barn is the main dining / party space whilst the repurposed Old Cattle Shed is usually used to host wedding ceremonies. The perfect year-round wedding venue.

As an experienced Cambridge wedding photographer that has worked here I know how to best capture its relaxed atmosphere.

Looking for suppliers who know and love Manor Barn?

If you’ve decided this is the venue for you and have secured your date, you’ll be able to start diving into full-on wedding planning.

One of the great things about Manor Barn is many of your logistics can be arranged in-house. For starters, the barn will provide you with a dedicated wedding planner. And couples are given exclusive hire of Manor Barn for three days. This provides ample time either side of your big day to layout, decorate and style the venue, plus clearing up afterwards. You have exclusive use of the venue so won’t be treading on anyone’s toes.

One of the next priorities will be finding a Cambridge wedding photographer who knows the best photo spots and blends in with the intimate vibe. A calm and low-profile presence. Further advice on photos below.

Eat, sleep and tie the knot

Manor Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies and receptions catering to up to 200 guests – both inside and outside – so this is a great choice of venue for couples who want their whole wedding in one place.

If you’d like to have a traditional marriage blessing, Manor Barn is the ideal location for a local church ceremony followed by your reception back at the Barn. The nearby anglican church (The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is situated just off the village high street, a mere 200 metres’ stroll from the venue on Washpit Lane.

The venue has its own onsite accommodation within the farm grounds. The married couple can use the honeymoon suite, The Hayloft, for two nights, featuring a generous sitting room, rolltop bathtub and countryside views. Guests choosing to stay the wedding night are able to hire the venue’s bell tents and camp in the adjoining meadow.

Mouth-watering dining options are served inside the Tythe Barn, also featuring a dedicated bar area with drinks service. And being based on a farm, the Manor Barn catering team takes pride in its local, seasonal produce.

You may also be considering musicians and other entertainment. Manor Barn has a purpose-built stage and PA setup for live bands or DJs once the wedding party gets into full swing.

Cosy atmosphere

Historic wooden beams, high vaulted ceilings and warm lighting will be the backdrop to an atmospheric celebration. You can never have enough twinkling fairy lights!

Stepping outside Manor Barn, the sweeping curved roof makes the buildings easy to recognise and provides a striking silhouette. The courtyard area offers a great space for the drinks’ reception and guests mingling.

The lawn areas make a good spot for group photos and during summer months there are planters and seasonal flowers. At night the ambient lighting gives the courtyard a warm village-square atmosphere whilst inside the barns take on a festive mood.

Best photo spots at Manor Barn (from a wedding photographer)

Behind the farmhouse barns and haybales you can walk directly to open fields and the local church. There are several breakout spaces around Manor Barn for chatting, unwinding and generally taking a breather:

  • Inside the barn – warm, atmospheric, and perfect for candid moments
  • Barn doorway – great natural light in the evening
  • Secluded courtyard – ideal for relaxed guest mingling photos
  • Farm and fields next to the barn – quick couple photos without disappearing too long

The layout to Manor Barn is simultaneously spacious yet close together. This means less traipsing from one area to another, and more time enjoying your day.

Why Manor Barn is perfect for weddings year-round

Manor Barn is a good choice at any time of year. During the summer you will be able to make the most of the courtyard, the gardens and the potential for gorgeous sunsets in the surrounding fields.

During the winter you’ll have a completely different feel – in a good way.

In the winter everything’s a bit more snug and atmospheric.

The dark wood, soft light, and warm indoor spaces make the barns sparkle during the colder months – where everyone just relaxes and settles in.

In terms of photos, you can do everything you need indoors if the weather is unkind. There’s plenty of shelter around the courtyard and a lovely ambience inside the barns. People lean into it – and that’s when the atmosphere really comes alive. I can honestly say some of the best weddings I’ve photographed have been grey, cold, or a bit wet.

My approach as a Manor Barn wedding photographer

TLDR: I allow you to be yourselves (and don’t make you perform).

If you’re planning to marry at Manor Barn and the idea of being in front of a camera makes you feel uncomfortable – you’re definitely not alone. Most couples I photograph feel exactly the same.

The good news is you don’t need to be extroverts or ‘good at photos’. You just need to show up on time, get married, and enjoy it!

Most of my couples hate posing. Which works perfectly as I do as little posing as possible.

I keep couple portraits quick and efficient. For the short time we do them (20-30 minutes max) I’ll give you a bit of gentle direction. Simple guidance about where to walk to make the most of nice light in the best areas. Then I’ll get back out of the way so you can be yourselves.

So I don’t treat you like mannequins or make it feel awkward. There’s no fake laughing on command, or being pulled away from your guests every five minutes.

For at least 90% of your day I shoot in a purely documentary, candid way. Blending in with your guests and letting natural moments happen in front of me. Photos that feel real. This also allows you more time to relax and enjoy your day.

I like to stay quiet, unobtrusive and light on my feet so I can react quickly to candid moments. Ninja style! So I carry minimal photography gear during the wedding day – just a couple of cameras with a few prime lenses (plus batteries and SD cards). I also employ the silent shutter method on both cameras, as this helps me to stay invisible and capture more authentic moments.  At the end of the evening many couples tell me they barely noticed me throughout the day.

Having photographed multiple weddings in Cambridgeshire, I’ve learnt that intimate venues like Manor Barn are ideal for relaxed, documentary-style photography.

We chose Nick because we didn’t want lots of posed photos and more candid shots and this is exactly what we received.

The photos capture all aspects of the day, and they look amazing. We are very happy with them. Thank you Nick!
